Arts Notes: Feb. 3, 2013
Works by the late Grace Martin Taylor may be seen starting Feb. 7 at The Art Store. "Composition #3," 1932/1985, whiteline color woodblock print, 12 1/2 by 14 inches.
Chosen as finalists were Conor Lannan, of Cross Lanes, Kendra Ramsey, of Fayetteville, and Jonathan Shin, of Charleston.
Goldenseal goes country
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- John Lilly, director of folklife and editor of Goldenseal magazine, will present "West Virginia Country Music and Goldenseal Magazine" at 6 p.m. Feb. 5 in the Archives and History library at the Culture Center.
Lilly will discuss the history of Goldenseal, now in its 39th year with a circulation of about 15,000. He has been editor of the magazine since 1997.
He will also present an overview of the magazine's coverage of traditional country music, an area of specialty for him personally. The program will include details of prominent country music programs in the state, such as WWVA's "Original Wheeling Jamboree," WCHS' "The Buddy Starcher Show" and "The Sleepy Jeffers Show." Country music pioneers Blind Alfred Reed and Roy Harvey will be included, as will several performers. Select recordings of these artists' music and vintage photographs will be featured.
Lilly has worked as a tour guide at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, Tenn., and as associate editor for the Old-Time Herald magazine. He edited the book "Mountains of Music: West Virginia Traditional Music from Goldenseal," and has contributed to several encyclopedia on music.
He is a singer-songwriter and has released six CD recordings. He'll end his presentation with one or two live musical selections.

Veterans' art show
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- The Martinsburg VA Medical Center will hold its annual Creative Arts Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 5.
Veterans who are enrolled in VA health care are eligible to enter their artwork -- paintings, photography or other creative arts such as drama and creative writing. The entry deadline is Feb. 28. For application information, call 304-263-0811, ext. 4594.
First-prize winners will advance to compete at the national level.
MU student show
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- The 27th Annual Student Juried Exhibition, composed of artwork created by undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Art and Design at Marshall University, will be displayed in the Birke Art Gallery through Feb. 15.
The Birke Art Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays.
Grace Martin Taylor
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A collection of paintings and prints by the late Grace Martin Taylor, of Charleston, some of which haven't been exhibited in West Virginia, will go on exhibit Feb. 7 at The Art Store.
Bob Bridges, assistant professor of art at West Virginia University and curator of the West Virginia University art collection, will talk about Taylor's work at an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Bridge Road shop. Bridges recently completed a book on Taylor due for publication later this year.
The works by Taylor were recently housed by Acme Fine Arts in Boston.
After attending the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and receiving a degree in journalism from WVU in 1929, Taylor served as head of the art department at the Mason College of Music and Fine Arts, in Charleston, which later merged with Morris Harvey College, and later as professor at Morris Harvey, now the University of Charleston.
She studied at the Art Students League of New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Art in Provincetown, R.I. Her work is found in numerous private and public collections including the Smithsonian Institution and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

Youth Symphony winner
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Violinist Andrew Sivaprakasam is the winner of the West Virginia Youth Symphony's 2012-13 concerto competition.
A senior at George Washington High School, Sivaprakasam has been a member of the Youth Symphony for nine years. He is the son of Michael and Shashi Sivaprakasam, and studies with professional violinist and instructor Ian Jessee.
Ten music students competed on Jan. 26, performing concertos with piano accompaniment in front of three judges selected from the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra. As the winner, Sivaprakasam will perform solo, playing "Zigeunerweisen" by Pablo de Sarasate, in the Youth Orchestra's spring concert at 3 p.m. May 5 at the Scottish Rite Temple.
Symphonic fellows
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Jared Davis, of Ona, and David Buch, of Beckley, have been selected Student Symphonic Fellows in the Andrew and Amy Vaughan Fellowship Program through the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra. Their selections are the result of auditions and interviews before a community panel on Dec. 8.
As part of their activities, the students will sit on stage alongside symphony musicians in different sections of the orchestra during rehearsals and will meet guest artists during the second half of the symphonic subscription series.
