A Charleston man was arrested a charged with malicious wounding Friday night in connection to a stabbing last weekend at Impulse Nightclub on Capitol Street, according to a criminal complaint.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Charleston man was arrested a charged with malicious wounding Friday night in connection to a stabbing last weekend at Impulse Nightclub on Capitol Street, according to a criminal complaint.
Aris Travon Hairston, 27, was charged with stabbing Kevin Clemens, a University of Charleston football player. Hairston turned himself in to police Friday night and was arraigned in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.
Clemens told detectives he got into an altercation with a man who bumped into him on the club's dance floor early Sunday. The altercation spilled out on the street, and Clemens was stabbed three times in the stomach.
According to the criminal complaint filed Friday night, a witness said the incident started after Clemens "shoulder checked" Aris, making Aris spill his drink at the club. The witness said he offered to beat up Clemens, and Aris responded, "I will handle it," the complaint says.
Police obtained surveillance video that shows Hairston "in the face" of Clemens outside the club, before lunging toward Clemens and stabbing him, according the complaint. Hairston later told his girlfriend, who was at the club early Sunday, "That will teach him when someone asks you to back up," the complaint says.
Clemens was taken to CAMC General Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery on his liver. He was later released.
Charleston officials have said they will revoke Impulse Nightclub's business license, citing what they called the club's inability to keep patrons safe. The club's liquor license has been suspended.
Earlier this week, Charleston police dropped charges against a 22-year-old Charleston man, who witnesses had mistakenly identified as the person who stabbed Clemens.
