W.Va. Veterans Memorial lights in disrepair

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The sculptor who designed the West Virginia Veterans Memorial more than two decades ago says he's disappointed the state has allowed the monument's lights to fall into disrepair.

P. Joseph Mullins says the lighting at the memorial at the state Capitol complex hasn't worked for months.

Mullins said the problems are not with his design, but because no organization that has specific maintenance responsibilities for the memorial.

The state Department of Administration say they don't know when the lights went out, but were first alerted to the problem sometime last year.

Officials are in the process of hiring a contractor to evaluate the lighting problem, which is said to be more extensive than changing light bulbs.

The $4 million memorial was completed in 1999.
