North Central Regional Jail fight probe finds no policy violations

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- A state official says an internal review of a fatal inmate fight at the North Central Regional Jail didn't find any policy violations by staff.

Nineteen-year-old Jeron Hawkins of Dunbar died earlier this month from injuries suffered during a fight with a federal prisoner being held at the same facility.

Regional jail authority executive director Joe DeLong says the two officers who were in the area where the fight occurred didn't see or hear it.

DeLong tells The Dominion Post that one officer was a roving officer who had stepped into another area to clear breakfast trays. The other officer stationed in a tower was watching him, as required whenever a roving officer enters a section with inmates.
