Once the project is finished, Kanawha County Schools will turn the sewage lines over to the city of Charleston, making it responsible for upkeep, according to Jim Withrow, the board's attorney.
But the city requires that Kanawha County Schools provide a bond for one year to take care of any possible immediate costs associated with the project.
"Hopefully it won't be a big deal because they are rebuilt or new lines, and there won't be any cost for a year. But if there is, and the city wants us to be responsible for it, we will post a bond with an insurance company to cover that," Withrow said.
Also at the meeting:
Capitol Conservation District, which works with partners to promote soil and water conservation, asked board members to consider turning the Tyler Middle School building into a regional farm-training center and voiced the support of various agricultural groups across the state.
County math curriculum specialist Crystal Godbey presented the board with the advantages and disadvantages of the "Next Generation" high school math program. While there have been pacing issues reported because some students don't have certain prerequisite skills, the program better prepares students for college and career expectations, Godbey said.
The next Kanawha County Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Feb. 11 at 6 p.m.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Kanawha County Board of Education approved more than a half-million dollars in roof replacements for several schools on Monday.
Roofs will be replaced at Ben Franklin Career and Technical Center, Nitro High, Elkview Middle, South Charleston Middle, Belle Elementary, Bridge Elementary, Dunbar Primary, Elk Elementary and Ruffner Elementary for a total of $544,025.
Boggs Roofing and Tri-State Roofing & Sheet Metal Group were awarded the bids, and completion is expected to take between 30 and 180 days, depending on the size of the project.
This is the second roofing project approved this year, and more are coming, said Kanawha County Schools Purchasing Director Tim Easterday.
"There are roof problems throughout the county. Actually, we need to replace a whole lot more," he said. "Roofs are something that have to be replaced over time, just like you would do your own home."
In 2012, the board approved a $237,565 contract with Tri-State Roofing to replace the roof at Chandler Elementary School, which is now an alternative program for high school and middle school students.
Also in special session on Monday, the board approved about $240,000 in maintenance bonds for the relocation and extension of sanitary sewer lines for the new elementary school in the Edgewood area on the West Side.
