Two arrested in connection with Roane kidnapping

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Two men were arrested late Monday after allegedly forcing a woman into their SUV in Roane County.

West Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Baylous said Rodney Mark Workman, 28, and Timothy Maxwell Drake, 31, were arrested at a home in Clendenin late Monday. Charges included kidnapping, domestic assault and domestic battery.

Workman allegedly enlisted Drake's help in kidnapping Workman's ex-girlfriend, Baylous said. He said Roane County authorities had been keeping an eye on Workman, who had allegedly been threatening to kill the woman.

Workman and Drake allegedly drove a maroon Chevrolet Blazer to a bus stop near Amma at about 4 p.m., where Workman forced the woman into the vehicle and Drake sped off, Baylous said.

Workman, in the back seat with the woman, pulled out an automatic-style pistol and jammed it into her ribs and hit her, according to a criminal complaint filed in Roane County Magistrate Court.

Drake laughed when the woman asked if Workman was going to kill her, she told State Police Cpl. P.S. Fisher.

"Nay he's not," Drake said jokingly, according to the complaint.

At one point, Workman advised Drake to pull over at an isolated gate where he allegedly said, "I'm going to shoot in you in the head and dump your body and if your mom shows up I'm going to shoot her, too."

The woman's mother had learned of the alleged kidnapping at the bus stop and followed the men's SUV to the Grannies Creek Bridge. At the bridge, the victim's mother pulled up behind the SUV and the victim jumped in the vehicle with her mother and they sped off, according to the complaint.

Cpl. Fisher said he later took photographic evidence of the woman's injuries and numerous bruises. He also obtained the woman's bloody sweatshirt as evidence.

The woman said both men reeked of alcohol and Workman said he was high.

State Police spent the rest of the evening trying to track the two men down, Baylous said. They were eventually taken into custody at a home in Clendenin.

Police charged Workman with kidnapping, conspiracy to commit a kidnapping, brandishing a deadly weapon, wanton endangerment, domestic assault and domestic battery. Drake was charged with kidnapping and conspiracy to commit a kidnapping. Workman was being held without bail in South Central Regional Jail. Drake was being held there in lieu of a $5,000 bail on Tuesday.
