Preston shelter director fired in Facebook dispute

KINGWOOD, W.Va. -- The director of the Preston County Animal Shelter has been fired in a dispute with county officials over the facility's Facebook page.

News outlets reported that the County Commission announced Courtney Austin's dismissal for insubordination Monday night after an executive meeting with her and her attorney.

Commissioners had suspended Austin last week.

Commission President Craig Jennings said Austin didn't comply with the commission's request to be given administrator access to the shelter's Facebook page. He said she also falsely posted on the page in January that the facility didn't have any heat or water.

The page is used to advertise animals available for adoption and to solicit volunteers and financial support.

Austin's attorney, Matthew H. Nelson, said he and Austin will discuss their options.
