CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Kanawha County Prosecutor Mark Plants fired Assistant Prosecutor Maryclaire Akers Tuesday.

Akers, 38, has worked for the prosecutor's office since 1999 and briefly served as Plants' chief of staff.

Plants told other media outlets "personel decisions are the hardest decisions that I make often times," but would not elaborate on his decison to fire Akers.

Another assistant prosecutor would move up into circuit court, where Akers prosecuted her cases, Plants told other outlets. He also said his office would hire a new assistant prosecuting attorney.
