Residents have reported seeing two water buffalo in the Evans area for several months.
Department of Agriculture spokesman Buddy Davidson says the agency used food to lure a mother water buffalo and her calf to a shed Wednesday. The animals were then moved to a holding site and placed in quarantine.
Davidson tells the Charleston Daily Mail that the quarantine is a precaution and the animals are doing well. A decision on the animals' future hasn't yet been made.
Agriculture officials believe the water buffalo came from a local game farm that closed last year.
Water buffalo are native to Southeast Asia.
