Two arrested in Raleigh County toddler's death
BECKLEY, W.Va. -- West Virginia State Police arrested a man and woman in connection with the death of a 2-year-old child in Fairdale on Saturday.
State Police Sgt. D.W. Bennett, of the Beckley detachment, said James Travis Green, 23, and Brandy Leann Smallwood, 27, were arrested Saturday afternoon.
In a separate news release, State Police Sgt. Michael Baylous said someone called 911 at about 9:30 p.m. Friday to report a child had fallen out of a mobile home's window and was injured.
Baylous said troopers discovered Green, the child's stepfather, had carried the toddler to a neighbor's house and made threats to commit suicide. Troopers found Green unresponsive inside his mobile home from an apparent drug overdose.
The child was taken to a Charleston hospital where the toddler died early Saturday. A preliminary investigation indicates the child died from being shaken and not from falling out of a window, Baylous said.
Green was taken to Raleigh General Hospital where he was released sometime Saturday. Troopers charged Green with first-degree murder and he was being held in Southern Regional Jail without bail.
Smallwood, the toddler's mother, was charged with child neglect resulting in death. She is in jail awaiting arraignment in Raleigh County Magistrate Court.
Police said the child's twin is in Child Protective Service's custody.
