Pioneer Canaan Valley skier David Faunce calls the roll for a ski school class at Timberline Resort. On-snow supervisor for the Timberline Ski School, the Pennsylvania native came to West Virginia as a student at Davis & Elkins College when valley ski slopes first opened.

"When I first got here, ...

In 1969, David Faunce graduated from high school in Rochester, N.Y.

In 1973, David Faunce was photographed at the ski lift at Canaan Valley State Park where he was one of the original ski instructors.

At the Arapahoe Basin ski resort in Colorado, David Faunce enjoyed skiing with his 6-year-old son, David IV. He lost his son to liver failure 26 years later.

When he can't find snow, you might see David Faunce on roller blades on the main street of Davis in Tucker County.

In 1992, David Faunce and his wife, Nora, were photographed during a ski outing at Canaan Valley State Park.
