State lawmakers seek Medicaid, exchange updates

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia lawmakers are hoping for more information on some major health care changes on the horizon.

The House-Senate Joint Committee on Health expects to hear from state officials on the subject today.

The topic includes whether West Virginia will expand Medicaid. The program is already making it difficult to balance the next state budget. The federal health care law calls on states to open this program to more low-income residents. Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has yet to announce West Virginia's plans.

The committee is also slated to receive an update on the planned health care exchange. This part of the federal overhaul aims to help individuals and small businesses buy insurance from the private market. The state is enlisting the federal government to help run its exchange.
