Creek project to reduce flooding in Matoaka
Advertiser

MATOAKA, W.Va. -- A creek that runs through Matoaka will be dredged to reduce the risk of flooding.

Mayor Todd Colonna says sediment was last removed from the creek in 1952.

Colonna tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that the Hugh I. Shott Jr. Foundation provided an $80,000 grant for the project.

He says the project also will improve Matoaka's appeal to all-terrain vehicle riders and other tourists.

The Mercer County town has been working to be linked with the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System's new Pocahontas Trail segment.

Work on the creek dredging project could begin at the end of the week.
