CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A man was killed after being hit Thursday morning by a Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority bus.

Sgt. Nick Null of the Charleston Police Department identified the victim as Joseph Bias, 40, of Kanawha City.

A Kanawha County Metro 911 dispatcher said Bias was hit just before 5 a.m. at Fourth Avenue and Stockton Street on Charleston's West Side. The address is the location of KRT's bus garage.

Null said the bus driver had apparently just started his run and was turning right onto Fourth Avenue when he hit Bias, who was apparently walking in the area.

Null said the death remains under investigation, but appears to have been accidental.

KRT General Manager Denny Dawson said transportation officials are investigating the accident. He said the bus driver who was involved is temporarily excused from duty.

"It's totally up to him when he comes back to work," Dawson said.

Dawson said there is no evidence so far that the driver did anything wrong.

Charleston Police shut the street down for about three hours while they reconstructed the accident. The street reopened at about 8:30 a.m.
