Mercer County Circuit Court Judge William Sadler issued an order Wednesday staying the demolition of the Judge Johnston House.
The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reports that Sadler's order will give the Mercer County Historical Society time to negotiate with the house's owner, Betty Cutlip.
Cutlip had agreed to let the city demolish the house after it was condemned.
The historical society's attorney, William H. Sanders, says the group hopes to raise money to buy the house, and then have it evaluated to determine whether it can be saved.
The historical society says the house was built in the 1830s. It's one of only three surviving pre-Civil War homes in Princeton.
