Two men arrested in brutal KRT Transit Mall beating
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Police arrested two Charleston men in connection to a brutal attack that nearly killed a man at the KRT Transit Mall on Monday.
Charleston Police Department Lt. Steve Cooper said Brandon Neal Douglas, 29, and Dana Darnell LaFond, 31, both of Charleston, were charged with felony malicious wounding Wednesday.
Douglas and LaFond attacked Brandon Coltey at 7:57 p.m. Monday in front of the Middle East Market and Deli near Slack Plaza on Laidley Street, Cooper said.
Security cameras captured one man allegedly hitting Coltey in the head with a brick and one man allegedly kicking him on the ground. Coltey, 20, of Charleston, remains in critical condition at CAMC General Hospital's Intensive Care Unit with severe head trauma, Cooper said.
He called it a "brutal attack" and said police routinely patrol that area.
The video apparently captured one man rummaging through Coltey's pockets and stealing his wallet. The security footage also shows dozens of possible witnesses passing through or watching. A few recorded the beating on a cellphone.
Douglas and LaFond were identified from security footage and from anonymous tips. Both are being held in South Central Regional Jail, each in lieu of a $150,000 bail.
