Upshur Arts Alliance scholarships available

Upshur Arts Alliance awards scholarships each year to Buckhannon-Upshur High School seniors who are planning to attend a four-year college or university and pursue a degree in visual, instrumental or performing arts. Intended studies can include art, music, drama, arts education and dance as well as other areas in the fine arts.

Two $500 awards are available for 2013. Each recipient must meet these criteria: quality of performance and/or visual works of art; quantity of artistic involvement; intention to continue an education in the arts; financial need and balanced lifestyle including scholarships and other activities.

Scholarship recommendation forms are available from art and music teachers at BUHS or by writing UAA, P.O. Box 395, Buckhannon, WV 26201 or UpshurA...@hotmail.com. Completed recommendation forms must be returned by noon May 1 for consideration.

Congressional Youth Art Competition winners announced

Three West Virginia high school art students will represent the state in the 2013 Congressional Art Exhibit at the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. They are Kaleigh Tucker of Lincoln High School, Chloe Richardson of Wahama High School and Cassidy Metzger of Spring Valley High School.

Runners-up are Ryan George and Cassidy Sullivan of Spring Valley High School and Michelle Riffle of Ravenswood High School.

Students submitted entries to the West Virginia State Museum, and exhibition juror Staci Leech Cornell selected the winners. Winners were recognized at the Culture Center on Feb. 26 and will be recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.
