CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Five people were arrested Saturday in Mason County after drugs and an explosive device were found inside a trailer, sheriff's deputies said.

Mason deputies also believe a 21-month-old child was present while methamphetamine was smoked at the residence on Keister Road in Ashton, according to a news release from the department.

Along with the methamphetamine, deputies found heroin, according to the release.

An explosive device, which deputies said had been set as a booby trap, was found in a detached garage, the release states. The West Virginia State Police bomb squad disarmed the device, the release said.

Michael A. Mayes, 49, Joshua Wyndall Smith, 32, and John Cornell, 32, were charged with possession of a Schedule 11 narcotic and child abuse causing injury. Matthew Gibson, 26, is facing those charges plus possession of an explosive device and wanton endangerment. Krista L. Aeiker, 20, is charged with child abuse causing injury.
