Families, churches, businesses and schools are urged to volunteer. More than 5,000 people cleared about 1,500 miles of roadway last year. The trash is sorted by glass, aluminum and plastic to be recycled. Since the program started in 1988, volunteers have removed 4 million pounds of trash from state highways.
