CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Volunteers are needed to help clean up trash scattered along West Virginia's highways.

The state Department of Environmental Protection and the State Division of Highways are taking registrations for the 2013 Adopt-A-Highways Spring Statewide Cleanup on April 27. Volunteers can register before April 12 by calling 1-800-322-5530 or emailing dep....@wv.gov.

Families, churches, businesses and schools are urged to volunteer. More than 5,000 people cleared about 1,500 miles of roadway last year. The trash is sorted by glass, aluminum and plastic to be recycled. Since the program started in 1988, volunteers have removed 4 million pounds of trash from state highways.
