Retiring business owners to donate building to Nitro

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A business slated to close shortly will donate a building to the city, Nitro Mayor Dave Casebolt said.

Nitro's City Council on Tuesday voted to accept the donation of the A-1 Carpet building on 20th Street.

Owners Carl and Cookie Clendenin are retiring and closing the business in the next few weeks, Casebolt said.

The building is near the Nitro City Hall and fire department. The council has not decided yet what to do with it.

"We're going to put a committee together and figure out what the best use is," Casebolt said.

The City Council also passed on second reading an ordinance that will allow the city to use a list of approved vendors from the state of West Virginia for some purchases rather than having its own bidding process.

The council also agreed to contribute $2,000 to a fishing tournament fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which will be held June 8 at the Nitro Boat Lodge.
