Deputies investigate crash that killed teen
ALUM CREEK, W.Va. -- Kanawha County sheriff's deputies are investigating the cause of a tractor-trailer crash that left a 16-year-old dead.
Capt. Bryan Robbins of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department said David McCarter, 58, of Wellston, Ohio, was heading south on Corridor G in a tractor-trailer hauling lumber when he apparently lost control and hit the Steven Wayne Smith Memorial Bridge near the Lincoln County line around 9 p.m. <co >Tuesday.
The truck then crossed the median, flipped and slid into the northbound lanes, where it slammed into a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Betty J. Sowards, 38, of Sumerco, Robbins said.
A passenger in the car, Brittany N. Sowards, 16, was killed in the crash. Betty Sowards and McCarter were both taken to CAMC General Hospital in Charleston. Sowards remained in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit on Wednesday night. McCarter was released Wednesday.
Corridor G was closed for about six hours following the crash.
Robbins said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
