WAYNE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State Police troopers and FBI agents are searching a Wayne County roadside for the body of a 19-year-old Marshall University student who was kidnapped more than a decade ago.
Authorities are searching a wooded area off Buffalo Creek Road in Wayne for the body of Samantha Burns, a State Police dispatcher said.
Burns, 19, went missing in November 2002 while on her way from college to her home in West Hamlin. Her burned-out burgundy Chevrolet Cavalier was found a week later on Haneys Branch Road, near the Cabell-Wayne county line.
Branden Leon Basham and Chadrick Evan Fulks, two fugitives, were each later convicted of one count of carjacking resulting in death in Burns' disappearance. They were also convicted in the disappearance of a 44-year-old South Carolina woman. Both Basham and Fulks are on death row in a South Carolina prison.
Police never found Burns' body and have investigated several leads over the years to no avail.
