W.Va. geography bee to take place Friday

ATHENS, W.Va. -- About 75 state students will compete Friday in the 2013 West Virginia Geographic Bee at Concord University in Athens.

The state competition is the second level of the annual National Geographic Bee. The first level began last November with contests in nearly 11,000 U.S. schools, in which millions of students participated.

Friday's winner will represent West Virginia at the 25th annual National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C. May 20-22.

Registration for Friday's event begins at 9:30 a.m. in the lobby of Concord's Alexander Fine Arts Center. After the preliminary rounds have been conducted, a tiebreaker will be held if needed at about 2:30 p.m. The championship round will begin at 3 p.m. in the main theater.
