CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A federal appeals court ruling has prompted the West Virginia Senate to revisit state election advertising rules.
A bill passed unanimously Monday would add billboards, mass mailings and phone banks to the kinds of ads requiring financial disclosures.
This reporting law applies to ads that aren't already covered by rules for candidates and party or political action committees. These independent ads must refer to a candidate for state-level or legislative office. They must also appear within 30 days before a primary or 60 days of a general election.
A U.S. District judge had struck down such rules when they applied to anything except broadcast or print publication ads. But the 4th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals reversed parts of that decision in January.
Monday's bill heads to the House.
