One dead, another arrested after early morning Fayette County shooting
GLEN JEAN, W.Va. -- One man is dead and another has been arrested after an early morning shooting in Fayette County.
Fayette County Sheriff's deputies were called to the Mountainair Mobile Home Park in Glen Jean shortly before 2 a.m. Wednesday for a shooting. Deputies found Gary Wayne Smith, 22, of Hilltop, lying inside a residence with a gunshot wound to his torso.
Smith was taken to Plateau Medial Center in Oak Hill where he was later pronounced dead, according to the sheriff's department.
Shortly after deputies arrived, Matthew Paul Gravley, 29, of Hilltop, came out of a nearby residence allegedly holding a handgun. Deputies ordered him to drop his weapon and he was arrested without incident, according to the sheriff's department.
A preliminary investigation indicates that Smith and Gravley were close neighbors and the shooting incident began as a physical altercation between the two men. Deputies say at least two shots were allegedly fired by Gravley, at least one of which struck Smith in the torso.
Gravley is facing murder charges and is currently in the Southern Regional Jail. The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to call the sheriff's department Detective Bureau at 304-574-4216.
