Volunteers needed for Canaan Valley tree planting

DAVIS, W.Va. -- Volunteers are being sought to help plant nearly 5,000 red spruce trees later this month at Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said the planting will take place April 20 and 21 as part of an Earth Day celebration. Volunteers are asked to arrive at the refuge visitors center in Davis at 9 a.m. on both days. Lunch will be provided.

Participants are asked to bring gloves, water, sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothes.

The wildlife service said red spruce once covered hundreds of thousands of acres in the state's higher elevations. Heavy logging reduced red spruce stands to less than 10 percent of their original size.
