Students to return to renovated Poca Elementary

By Staff reports

WINFIELD, W.Va. -- Renovations to Poca Elementary School have been completed and students returning from spring break Tuesday will start classes at the school.

Putnam County Superintendent Chuck Hatfield also told school board members Monday night that middle school students would move to their new school today.

The elementary students had been housed at the new middle school while their school was being renovated.

"We've really come a long way," Hatfield said. "Those kids are excited."

The elementary school has been completely remodeled and eight classrooms have been added. The middle school's new, 66,000-square-foot building now connects to the elementary school.

The new school and renovations were paid for with a school bond that voters approved in 2009.

In other business, Hatfield told board members that the Putnam Career and Technical Center would again host the SkillsUSA Leadership Conference next year.

The conference held late last month included a competition among vocational students. Putnam students earned 32 gold medals.
