MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Two majors in the new West Virginia University School of Journalism are being combined into a new one.
Strategic Communications will replace the separate advertising and public relations majors this fall. It affects only new students, not those already enrolled.
Dean Maryanne Reed said Wednesday it will teach students how to develop and produce persuasive messages.
She says the major was developed in response to the changing industry and prepare students to work across media platforms. They'll also be able to specialize in areas including social media strategy, advertising design, event planning or publicity and promotion.
Students will learn writing, research, graphic design, direct marketing, media planning and campaign development for real-world clients.
