WHITESVILLE, W.Va. -- A coal heritage park is the next project for a group of volunteers who worked to erect a memorial to the 29 miners killed in the Upper Big Branch mine explosion.
Media outlets report that the Upper Big Branch Mining Memorial Group plans to build the park near the miners' memorial in Whitesville. The park will be called the Coal Heritage RiverWalk.
Memorial group vice president Mike Gwinn says the park will have two picnic pavilions, a stage and a riverfront walking trail.
Renderings of the park will be on display at the Health and Wellness Expo scheduled for April 25 at the Raleigh-Boone Technical Center. The memorial group and Catholic Charities of West Virginia are hosting the expo.
