Planting a tree not so simple, experts say

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- If you're celebrating Earth Day by planting a tree, the experts have some tips.

Larry Campbell, of West Virginia University Extension, suggests considering the tree's function, the site restrictions, soil conditions and sun exposure before deciding what kind of tree to buy.

He says a backyard fruit tree might seem like a good idea but could ultimately lead to more maintenance down the road. People should also consider utility lines that run overhead nearby or underground, and consider the size the tree will be when it's mature.

Campbell also advises against staking a tree, saying the trunks will go stronger without that support.

Spring is a good time to plant because temperatures tend to be less stressful.
