PHILIPPI, W.Va. -- Middle school sports in Barbour County have been reinstated, thanks to private donations.
The Barbour County Board of Education accepted a check for more than $24,000 from the Barbour County All Sports Organization on Monday. A private donor will provide another $10,000.
The money will be used to pay middle school coaching salaries and benefits. The board had voted in February to eliminate the positions because of a lack of funding.
Fundraising efforts included a 177-mile trek by two coaches to Canton, Ohio. Philippi Middle School football coach Nick Mayle and Philip Barbour High School football coach Marcus Johnson left Philippi on April 1 and arrived at the Pro Football Hall of Fame on April 6.
