WEIRTON, W.Va. -- The 117 men who died while working in the Weirton Steel Co. plant from 1919 to 1999 will be remembered this week.
The memorial ceremony for the fallen workers will be conducted Thursday morning at the Steelworkers Memorial Park. The Weirton Daily Times said co-workers, friends and family will attend.
The ceremony will include a bagpiper. The names of all 117 steelworkers will be read.
Lewis Chaney, 21, was the first work-related casualty at the then-new steel mill when he died on April 11, 1919, after being struck on the head by a piece of steel.
