Virginia Lewis, a Mingo County native, with President Bill Clinton in 1996. Lewis was selected by the state Department of Health and Human Resources to go with then-Gov. Gaston Caperton to the White House for the signing of the Welfare Reform Act. Habitat for Humanity of West Virginia on Thursday will recognize Lewis, who has spent more than half of her life fighting for affordable housing.
Virginia Lewis, who served as executive director of the Mingo County Housing Authority for 30 years and helped create it, will be inducted into the West Virginia Affordable Housing Hall of Fame on May 2.
Lewis helped create many affordable housing opportunities in Mingo County during her time as executive director of the Mingo County Housing Authority. Pictured is a 20,000-square-foot building in downtown Delbarton. Six dilapidated structures were demolished to create the building, which now houses 11 two-bedroom apartments and five commercial spaces.
