Historic Bridgeport bridge to be restored

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Work is expected to begin this summer on the restoration of a historic bridge in Bridgeport.

City engineer Tom Brown says the $120,000 project includes installing a bearing plate between the bridge and its foundation.

Brown tells The Exponent Telegram that the bearing plate will allow the bridge to better contract and expand when temperatures change.

Loose surface cement also will be removed.

Bids for the project will be accepted until May 15.

Built in 1924, the bowstring concrete arch bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Bridgeport Lamp Chimney Co. used the bridge to move glassware from its factory to its warehouse.
