BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -- Authorities are investigating the dumping of more than 10 dead pit bull puppies outside Bluefield.
Mercer County Animal Control Officer Tracy Monninger told the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that a property owner called 911 on Sunday because he smelled an odor. Monninger said he saw someone throwing bags from a vehicle two days earlier.
Another animal control officer went to the scene and found that the puppies were decomposing. Monninger said up to 13 puppies might have been dumped, but the decomposition made it difficult to determine the number.
Mercer County Prosecutor Scott Ash said a necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of the puppies' deaths.
Ash said Assistant Prosecutor John McGinnis is working with local investigators on the case.
