State chief justice to speak at Law Day event
WELCH, W.Va. -- Supreme Court Chief Justice Brent Benjamin is the featured speaker for McDowell County's Law Day event.
Benjamin is scheduled to speak at 11 a.m. today at the McDowell County Courthouse in Welch.
In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed Law Day as a day to reflect on the role of law in the founding of the country, and to recognize its importance in society. It's usually held on or around May 1.
The national theme for this year's observance is "Realize the Dream: Equality for All.'' McDowell County school children used that them in essay, poster and song contests. Winners will be announced Wednesday at the Law Day event, which is hosted annually by Circuit Judges Booker T. Stephens and Rudolph J. Murensky II.
