Walking tour planned for Mason County

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Woods lovers and woodland owners are invited to an educational walking tour on May 18 in Mason County.

Guests who attend the tour, at the property of Bob Alexander, will hear about some key strategies he and his family use to maintain access roads, control invasive plants and grapevines, manage and harvest timber and plant oak and other tree species.

Alexander will lead the tour, and guests also will visit wildlife food plots and habitat areas.

The walking tour will cover generally flat ground with a few relatively steep sections, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended, according to a news release. Following the tour, a lunch will be provided.

The event is free and all are welcome, but please RSVP with Dan Magill at the WVU Appalachian Hardwood Center by calling 304-293-9419 or by e-mailing dmagill@wvu.edu

The walking tour runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 18. The West Virginia Woodland Owners Association, the WVU Appalachian Hardwood Center and Extension Service, the West Virginia Forestry Association and the WV Tree Farm Program are sponsoring the walking tour.
