A man who said he took an excess of anti-anxiety medication and then threatened to shoot himself and anyone who tried to stop him was detained after a SWAT team stormed his Elkview home late Saturday night.
After the SWAT team entered, the man was immediately detained and there were no injuries. He had a loaded gun on the couch next to him.
A spokesman for the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department said that it was a mental health situation, no charges are likely to be filed and the man's name will not be released.
The man, a Vietnam veteran, called a Veterans Affairs crisis hotline saying he had taken too much medication and would shoot himself. He also said he would shoot police officers to force them to kill him.
Police officers evacuated neighbors and closed down Will's Creek Road, where the man lived.
Neighbors told police that the man had multiple pistols and rifles in the house.
After the SWAT team entered, the man was transported to Charleston Area Medical Center to undergo a mental health evaluation.
