Williamson police officer found dead
WILLIAMSON, W.Va. -- A Williamson city police officer on suspension after being arrested for driving under the influence was found dead Monday in neighboring Kentucky.
Jefferson Taylor III, 27, was found unresponsive Monday afternoon at a family member's home in Hardy, Ky., said Williamson Police Chief Dave Rockel.
Taylor is from Kentucky, and Rockel believed he had been staying with his parents.
"We are deeply saddened by this event,'' Rockel said. "Mingo County has had its share of tragedy. Our prayers go out with this.''
Last week, Taylor was put on unpaid suspension after crashing his cruiser in Kentucky early on the morning of April 30. He was off duty at the time.
Taylor, who had been on the Williamson police force for two years, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.
Kentucky State Police are investigating both the accident and Taylor's death, Rockel said. A Kentucky State Police spokesman said an autopsy will be conducted.
