Public meeting scheduled on I-64 widening in Putnam

By Staff reports

NITRO, W.Va. -- A plan to widen a 3.79-mile stretch of Interstate 64 in Putnam County is the topic of a May 20 public meeting in Nitro, according to the state Division of Highways.

The plan calls for adding two lanes to the four-lane section of I-64 between the Crooked Creek interchange (Exit 39) and a point just east of the Nitro interchange (Exit 45). The section being considered for widening lies between two existing six-lane sections of I-64.

The project is part of the five-year development plan included in the Department of Transportation's Statewide Transportation Improvement Program. The May 20 public meeting constitutes the first step in a National Environmental Policy Act study of the project.

No formal presentation will be made during the meeting, scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. in Rock Branch Elementary School at 4616 First Ave., Nitro. A handout with details of the project will be available at the meeting and online at the state Department of Transportation's website at www.go.wv.gov/dotcomment. The public will be invited to ask questions and submit written comments at the meeting and on the DOT website.
