NITRO, W.Va. -- A plan to widen a 3.79-mile stretch of Interstate 64 in Putnam County is the topic of a May 20 public meeting in Nitro, according to the state Division of Highways.

The plan calls for adding two lanes to the four-lane section of I-64 between the Crooked Creek interchange (Exit 39) and a point just east of the Nitro interchange (Exit 45). The section being considered for widening lies between two existing six-lane sections of I-64.

The project is part of the five-year development plan included in the Department of Transportation's Statewide Transportation Improvement Program. The May 20 public meeting constitutes the first step in a National Environmental Policy Act study of the project.

No formal presentation will be made during the meeting, scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. in Rock Branch Elementary School at 4616 First Ave., Nitro. A handout with details of the project will be available at the meeting and online at the state Department of Transportation's website at The public will be invited to ask questions and submit written comments at the meeting and on the DOT website.
