Belington mayor resigns after residency questioned

BELINGTON, W.Va. -- Belington Mayor Jody Haller has resigned after a local pastor questioned his legitimacy to hold the office.

Belington Church of the Nazarene pastor Richard L. Chambers says Haller has moved outside the city limits. Chambers filed a complaint in April and called on Haller to resign earlier this month during a city council meeting.

The Inter-Mountain reports that Haller submitted his resignation Thursday and the city council accepted it during an emergency meeting Friday. The letter said Haller was resigning for personal reasons.

The council appointed Belington's clerk and recorder, Susan Bradley, as interim mayor.

The newspaper says it wasn't notified of the emergency meeting. City officials say they posted a notice prior to the meeting, as required by state law.
