South Charleston Speedway station to expand
SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Speedway on MacCorkle Avenue in South Charleston is rebuilding and expanding.
Speedway owners bought property next to its current location, 400 MacCorkle Ave., from the University of Charleston, Mayor Frank Mullens said at the South Charleston Economic Development Authority's monthly meeting Tuesday.
Mullens said the new gas station would have a bigger store with more food and drink options and more pumps available.
He didn't know when construction would begin on the site, but he said Speedway has a 90-day turnaround target to tear down and rebuild a new station.
"I think when businesses are investing here, it's just as important as a new business coming in," Mullens said.
Speedway officials referred questions to a company spokesman, who did not return a phone call Tuesday.
Also on Tuesday, Mullens said he has had email conversations with Sheetz officials about opening a convenience store in South Charleston. He wouldn't disclose any more information about that.
"There are a lot of irons in the fire," he said.
