CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Special Metals and United Steelworkers Local 40 have given the Huntington Area Food Bank a $35,000 donation, the food bank announced Wednesday.
The company and steelworkers employed there have put money aside for some time.
A committee of union workers and management decided to give the money to HAFB.
The donation will fund 280,000 meals.
In a prepared statement, Greg Kingery, president of Local 40, said the union is encouraged by what the food bank does in the community.
"Being able to help so many people in such a large area is important and we know Huntington Area Food Bank can feed so many," Kingery said.
In a prepared statement, food bank board president Debra Johnson-Tourigny said she couldn't be happier with the donation.
"Our first purchase with this money will be fresh produce," she said. "It's something we sometimes take for granted, but the people we will serve rarely get."
