Scaled-back Vandalia Gathering set in state

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia will celebrate its heritage this weekend during the Vandalia Gathering at the state Capitol Complex.

This year's festival featuring traditional music, food and a quilting competition will be held Friday night and Saturday. It's being scaled back from the traditional three-day gathering to focus more attention on the state's 150th birthday celebration.

Music contests on Saturday include lap dulcimer, old-time banjo and fiddle, bluegrass banjo, mandolin and flat-pick guitar. The contests are only open to West Virginia residents.

The Vandalia Gathering also will be featured on June 22 during the sesquicentennial celebration at the Capitol.
