CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Two men who tried to flee police during a traffic stop in Charleston have been sentenced to federal prison on heroin-related charges.
U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said Stephen Michael Hopkins, 36, of Huntington, was sentenced Thursday in federal court in Charleston to 12 years and seven months in prison. A co-defendant, Eddie Daivon Morgan, 32, of Beckley, received a four-year prison term Wednesday.
Goodwin said Hopkins and Morgan were inside a parked car in March 2011. After an officer ordered them to step out of the vehicle, Hopkins drove off but eventually crashed. Both suspects were arrested a short time later. A search found more than $10,920 in cash, heroin, marijuana and a cellphone belonging to Morgan.
