Unvaccinated Randolph County girl to march with class
ELKINS, W.Va. -- A Randolph County girl who was banned from attending school after refusing to get state-mandated vaccinations will take part in her graduation ceremony.
Olivia Hudok is valedictorian in a class of three at the Pickens School, and she told The Inter-Mountain she will be there on Saturday.
Interim Superintendent Terry George confirmed Friday that Hudok will participate.
George said the public health risk would be no greater if she participated in the ceremony than if she just watched it.
"The student's interest in participating in the graduation ceremony and enjoying the recognition of her accomplishment outweighs any other factors that bear upon this decision," George said.
Hudok, 18, said the dispute she and father Phil had with the district was not about winning; it was about standing up for what's right.
Circuit Judge Jaymie Godwin Wilfong ordered the district to provide homebound instruction for Hudok this year. Wilfong is now the guest speaker at graduation.
