An Appalachian Power work crew replaces a telephone pole knocked down on Smith Street during an early-morning robbery attempt Friday.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The driver of a car smashed into a telephone pole while escaping an attempted armed robbery on the East End early Friday, police said.

Charleston Police Sgt. Tony Hazelett said the victim of the attempted robbery had three men in his car on the East End, when one of the men pulled out a revolver and held it to the driver's head.

Hazelett said the victim swatted at the gun, put his foot on the accelerator of the car and smashed into the telephone pole. He then jumped out of the car and ran to nearby CAMC General Hospital. Police are looking for the three men, who also fled.
