Weston man gets probation in death of stepson
WESTON, W.Va. -- A Weston man who pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of his stepson will spend two years on probation.
Media outlets report that a circuit judge sentenced 39-year-old Gary Allen Wiant to a year in jail on Monday, and then suspended the sentence.
Wiant had pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charge in February.
Lewis County prosecutor Mike Smith says Wiant intervened when the victim, 19-year-old Cory Burkhart, attacked the teen's mother, Angela Burkhart. Cory Burkhart died from asphyxiation during a struggle.
Smith says Burkhart had a history of outbursts.
Angela Burkhart also faces charges stemming from her son's death.
