Beckley man manipulated elderly landlady, police say
FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. -- A Beckley man manipulated his elderly landlady into paying his bills, co-signing for a loan and giving him money, police said.
Joey Scott Voiers, 44, was charged with obtaining money by false pretenses and financial exploitation of the elderly.
Voiers began renting an apartment in Fayetteville from an elderly woman in 2008. He agreed to perform repairs and renovations to the woman's home in exchange for reduced rent, Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler said in a news release.
Throughout the years, Voiers gained the woman's trust and began taking advantage of her, Kessler said.
The woman co-signed a loan for Voiers' car and later began paying Voiers' car insurance. She then began paying for Voiers' TV and cell phone, Kessler said.
Voiers also allegedly used the victim's credit cards and checkbooks, resulting in thousands of dollars in charges. The victim was in a skilled nursing facility at the time. The repairs Voiers made to the victim's home were not completed or not up to acceptable standards, Kessler said. Voiers was arraigned in Fayette County Magistrate Court and released on a $50,000 bail.
