LEWISBURG, W.Va. -- In Greenbrier County, West Virginia's 150 years of statehood will be celebrated at noon Thursday with birthday cake served on the lawn at Carnegie Hall. Live music will be performed for guests at the free event.
From 7 to 9 p.m., the Hoyt Street Hotshots will play for an old-time square dance in the auditorium. The price is $5.

Droop Mountain hikes
HILLSBORO, W.Va. -- Four memorial hikes are planned to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Droop Mountain.
The hikes are scheduled for June 22, July 20, Aug. 31 and Nov. 5-6 and will be sponsored by Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park in cooperation with the Pocahontas County Tourism Commission's Appalachian Enrichment Series.
At various points during the hikes, there will be short readings of official reports, letters and diaries to give historical context. The hikes will alternate among the routes taken by the Confederate and Union armies.
Re-enactors with authentic period clothing are welcome to give a military air to the excursions. All hikes will begin at Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park and participants will carpool or be shuttled to the starting points.
For safety and logistics, participation will be limited and pre-registration is required.

Kanawha State Forest pool
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Kanawha State Forest swimming pool is open for the summer from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children 11 and younger.
Kanawha State Forest has a 46-site campground, picnic shelters and hiking and biking trails. These facilities and the swimming pool are open to the public. There is no admission fee to enter the forest.
The Kanawha Valley Community Band will give a concert at 3 p.m. June 16 at the pool to celebrate the state's 150th birthday.
At 10 a.m. June 22, naturalists Sara Miller and Lynn Hartman will lead a program on the mysteries of forest birds. Bring binoculars or use ones available at the forest and meet at Shelter No. 5.
Greenbrier kids discount
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. -- The Greenbrier resort is promoting itself as "America's Family Resort," with discounts of 40 percent off an additional room for children.

150th at Blennerhassett
PARKERSBURG, W.Va. -- Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park will honor the 150th anniversary of West Virginia's becoming the 35th state on June 20 with a birthday celebration beginning at 1 p.m. on the island.
Activities and entertainment include Appalachian music, a historical presentation about West Virginia's statehood, free birthday cake and ice cream, a barbershop quartet concert and free bike rentals and family games. Horse-drawn wagon rides, mansion tours, gift shop and snack stand also will be available.
The Island Belle Sternwheeler departs hourly for Blennerhassett Island from Point Park in Parkersburg beginning at 11 a.m. with the last boat leaving from the island at 4:30 p.m. There is a fee for the boat ride; tickets are available at the Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History at 137 Juliana St., near Point Park.

Stonewall concert series
WESTON, W.Va. -- The McFly Outdoor Concert Series at Stonewall Resort continues at 6:30 p.m. June 22 with country music by Girlz in Black Hats and the acoustical sounds of Bradley Shaw.
The concert will take place at the outdoor theater at the Roanoke Activity Plaza. Guests are encouraged to bring chairs.
